VA cuts program for homeless vets
after touting Trump's commitment

Four days after Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin held a big Washington event to tout the Trump administration’s promise to house all homeless vets, the agency did an about-face, telling advocates it was pulling resources from a major housing program.

The VA said it was essentially ending a special $460 million program that has dramatically reduced homelessness among chronically sick and vulnerable veterans. Instead, the money would go to local VA hospitals that can use it as they like, as long as they show evidence of dealing with homelessness.

Anger exploded on a Dec. 1 call that was arranged by Shulkin’s Advisory Committee on Homeless Veterans to explain the move. Advocates for veterans, state officials and even officials from HUD, which co-sponsors the program, attacked the decision, according to five people who were on the call.

Mayor wants more
'deep cleansing'
of homeless
camps

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Mayor Sylvester Turner urged the court to take action after a man was shot at a homeless encampment on Tuesday.
It happened in the 4400 block of Caroline. The encampments are located underneath US-59.
Mayor Turner said there have been two murders and one stabbing at encampments in the past 30 days.

Apartment rents rising in Harvey’s wake


Apartment seekers suddenly are facing higher rents as occupancy tightens across Houston and the damage estimate for flooded units reaches into the tens of thousands.

Complexes that stayed dry in heavily flooded areas like west Houston, Kingwood and Spring have been slammed with new tenants. Landlords there are finding their apartments are worth much more than they were before Hurricane Harvey, when there was a glut of empty units and flagging demand.

City Pursues Strategies
for Homeless, Panhandlers

Mayor Sylvester Turner recentlyannounced a more holistic approach to reducing homelessness and invited the community to help implement it.  The mayor’s plan involves expedited efforts to permanently house the homeless, more shelter beds, new public health and safety regulations and an anti-panhandling awareness campaign.

Federal court issues temporary restraining
order against city in homelessness lawsuit


HOUSTON - A federal court has issued a temporary restraining order against the City of Houston that challenges two ordinances that target the homeless in an ongoing lawsuit.

Imagine a community on a 48-acre site, rich with services most needed by those in or near homelessness. Picture a Star of Hope Center for emergency care and counseling, and numerous community service providers for medical, dental and job search support. Visualize programs for educational advancement, after school programs for the youth, daycare and early childhood education plus safe, affordable, permanent housing—all within a walkable neighborhood.

Another prominent feature of the Cornerstone Community℠ plan is its Homeless Prevention Initiatives program. This program offers specific outreach activities providing urgently needed support such as counseling, referrals and food assistance to those in a pre-homeless situation. Bible Studies and chapel services will be offered to all clients regardless of the length of time they reside at Cornerstone Community℠.
